Just over a year after a Nissan car belonging to former Attorney General (AG) Carlyle Dougan Q.C. was destroyed by fire at Rivishi, the veteran lawyer is still seeking justice.
Dougan, a former Magistrate and DPP here, told this publication that following the incident in April last year, he reported the matter at the Calliaqua Police Station, and identified five suspects to the police, but to date nobody has been charged.
He said the vehicle was used by his wife Elma who died in 2015, and was parked in front of his second house located below his main house where he lives with his assistant.
He said had it not been for the quick action of his assistant, after they had spotted the blaze around 2am, the fire would have destroyed the second house.
Dougan, a retiree, now in his 80s, said that he is still traumatized, and continues to have nightmares as a result of the incident.
According to him, persons living in the surrounding areas have accused his dogs of killing their sheep and goats, and he believes the fire was set in retaliation.
But the retired attorney denied that his dogs killed anybody’s sheep or goats, and said it was eventually revealed that hungry stray dogs were the culprits.
When contacted on Tuesday, Commissioner of Police Colin John said Dougan spoke to him about a week ago in relation to the fire, and he (John) referred him to Superintendent Trevor Bailey, who is in-charge of the division in which Dougan lives.
Speaking with this publication on Wednesday, Superintendent Bailey said that to date there was no evidence to charge anyone with the fire, but investigations are ongoing.
