Dear Prime Minister,
In the earlier parts of this morning, around 9 am, it became public knowledge that once again, a murderer has hit the streets of St. Vincent and the Grenadines after escaping first on October 1st, 2019. I dread the fact that our country, my dear Vincy land is not treating this as the issue of which it is.
For many whom may be unaware, the subject was put on trial and charged for the fact that he murdered a 16 year old teenager in the United States through strangulation. Many of whom are citizens of this country, are parents and have children who are that age. It is alleged that, before the incident, they were in a relationship and things did not end how the male party would have wanted it to.
I aim not to look at Trinidad or any other country around the world but it is time we understand, it is time we hold the system accountable for the way in which it treats our women. We have heard of cases where a husband goes up to his children’s school and shoots his wife in the presence of their son, we have heard of other cases where women are raped and these men, face little to no consequences within my personal opinion.
I have evaluated the situation at hand and I promised my self I will try my best to write and do so without emotions but it is impossible for me to do such as I have a niece, I have nephews, I have cousins whom are teenagers and I often wonder, how I would feel if it was me.

My dear prime minister, it is public knowledge and a fact that you are the minister of national security and I seek not the position of “the opposition” in anyway.
I speak and I do so only as a citizen of this blessed land, a brother, an uncle and a friend. I am of the opinion that the punishment extended towards the men who murder our women by their hands are not facing the punishment they simply should.
Women birth us, breathe us, raise us and are majority of the statistics that make up the single parent rate; they do not, under any circumstances deserve such treatment and I am afraid St. Vincent does not have the kind of punishment to scare them from doing it. Some may argue that one would commit a crime if they want to, but let it be so that the justice system could say they do it’s part as currently, I dread the opinion that they are not, indeed, doing what they should. Recently, news broke that a 26 year old individual was sentenced for raping a 8 year old female.
Many of us are parents to 8 year olds, brothers, sisters, aunts and uncles to 8 year olds and for one to picture their child or relative crying for help, to be left alone, to stay alive in such a situation is a thought not pondered often; imagine if it happened to them only for the justice system to give them 15 years in prison. It speaks and it speaks highly of our justice system.

As minister of national security, prime minister, you are OBLIGATED to protect our nation in every way possible. The escape, the second escape of this person is none of a minor issue, it is not a minor matter. If he could escape Her Majesty’s prison twice, it speaks volume and it says that there is still a problem within the security of said prison. It is clear as day that the problem is not him and he is not an advanced rocket scientist.
Let me not be misunderstood in anyway, I do not expect everything to be perfect within the government because I understood a long time ago that perfect is impossible.

Recently, there were talks of the prison being understaffed and having not enough security guards to carry out the duties to protect the nation from the criminals who are doing their time there. It is also alleged that the security guards who are employed at HMP, are over worked. We have a nation of many young men and women who seek employment, one way of solving this problem is having a year or two training process in the necessary departments to create the best security for the nation there is, because it is no doubt that our nation is one of priceless.
The prison was created for a reason and I am afraid that recently the presence of it , in my opinion, does not appear to make much sense. This issue that broke dawn today, can not be treated as one that is simple or minor because it is nothing close to it. In the event the subject goes into what would be described as a killing spree, it then becomes a national crisis.
Let us not wait until this day comes before we can start speaking of the issue with importance; we should start protecting our blessed land and we should start today.
