Sergeant 444 Kenny Jones, the second-in-command of the Traffic Department of the RSVG Police Force, is recommending a point system to deal with reckless drivers.
Jones made the recommendation last week Wednesday during the appearance of several persons on traffic charges, including reckless driving.
Jones observed that every Wednesday when traffic matters are heard, the same offenders are in Court, and he pointed out that it was time that a point system be put in place so that when an offender accumulates a certain number of points, based on his convictions he/she should be disqualified from holding a driver’s license.
Jones’s comments came as Chief Magistrate Rechanne Browne, while speaking on the issue of reckless driving, reflected on an accident she had witnessed.
Defense lawyer Ronald Marks, who was sitting at the Bar table, also spoke about an experience he had and supported Sergeant Jones’ call for a point system.
Speaking with us later, Jones said the Traffic Department had been calling for a point system for some time now, and expressed the view that it will help to curve these acts of reckless driving, especially by Public Service vehicles, but he acknowledged that appropriate legislation would first have to be put in place.
Meanwhile, Jones is again asking the public to report any form of reckless or dangerous driving they might witness. He noted that the Commissioner of Police had the authority to suspend someone’s driver’s license pending the outcome of the matter.
