A trained Vincentian screenwriter, and now an author, tells his story in a new book about him leaving St. Vincent and the Grenadines in search of his missing mother. According to Rodney Pemberton born in Calliaqua, things became suspicious after his mother got married. Christmas and birthday cards that were once sent to him and his sister came to a cease. Relatives in New York and Toronto began to reach out to his mother out of concern to find out what was going on, but that caused her husband to change the telephone numbers each time relatives reached out to her.

His mother began to constantly move from U.S. state to state without her informing anyone, then suddenly, it was as if she’d vanished. Letters were sent to her last known addresses in attempts to reach her but the letters all returned and were stamped “return to sender”. Many presumed that she was dead, but Rodney was convinced otherwise, and took it upon himself to journey to the United States in search of her and found her thousands of miles away from New York City, Paralyze from below her waist, secluded in a house with her husband and four-year-old daughter who was her only aid, but was forbidden to dial 9-1-1 for any emergencies.
Pemberton was then left to face his ordeal. He was swindled out of every dime by an immigration Attorney who never completed the job he was hired for.

Upon that, Pemberton’s generosity caused him to lose all of his savings and the little investments he had after a friend, his girlfriend, and their six-month-old baby came to him for assistance. Worried that they’d be homeless, Pemberton emptied his bank account and used his invested money to assist them, but he was never repaid, and it caused a serious financial strain on him. He found himself living from paycheck to paycheck with his bills piling up and was forced to live off noodles for a long period.
