The New Democratic Party (NDP) in St. Vincent and the Grenadines has issued a call for the government to urgently address the ongoing cost-of-living crisis that has left many Vincentians in a precarious situation. NDP Chairman, Honourable Daniel Cummings, highlighted that the economic strain on the population has been exacerbated by recent events such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the La Soufrière volcanic eruption, and Hurricane Beryl. Cummings noted that the government has yet to take meaningful action, despite the clear need for intervention.

Cummings pointed out that the current session of Parliament presents an opportune moment for the government to implement measures aimed at easing the financial burden on citizens. He stressed that the NDP views the government’s intervention as essential, particularly in light of the devastation caused by Hurricane Beryl.

As part of its proposed solutions, the NDP has advocated for a reduction in the Value Added Tax (VAT) from 16% to 13% and a decrease in the Custom Service Charge to make goods more affordable for consumers. Additionally, the NDP has called for an expansion of support payments for lower-income families over a six-month period to provide further financial relief.

The NDP’s statement underscores its commitment to tackling the cost-of-living crisis and supporting Vincentians during this challenging time.
