Rainforest Seafoods SVG Ltd. has applied to the Physical Planning and Development Board for permission to construct a new seafood market in Calliaqua. While the project is being hailed as a potential boost to the local seafood industry, small-scale fisherfolk are raising concerns, claiming the development could threaten their livelihoods.

Speaking to Asberth News Network, one local fisherman remarked, “This feels like a direct attack on us small fisherfolk. We don’t have the resources to compete with a big company like this, and we’re worried about losing our customers.”

Another fisherman added, “We’ve been supplying fresh fish to the community for years, but with Rainforest Seafoods coming in, it feels like they’re trying to edge us out. It’s going to be hard to survive if we’re pushed aside.”

A third fisher shared, “This isn’t just about selling fish. This is about families, generations of fishermen who depend on this work to live. A project like this could destroy what we’ve built.”

The public has a 14-day window to inspect the application and submit written representations to the Physical Planning and Development Board. As these concerns emerge, the balance between economic development and the preservation of small-scale livelihoods is now under scrutiny.

Asberth News Network is closely following this story and will provide further updates as more details become available.
