On Saturday, November 30, 2024, Soroptimist International of St. Vincent and the Grenadines hosted a one-day seminar at the UWI Global Campus on Murray’s Road, Kingstown. The event was part of the UN’s “16 Days of Activism” campaign, aimed at ending violence against women and girls.

The seminar featured an array of expert presentations addressing the different dimensions of violence and its impacts. CPL599 Miss Jordon, representing the Police Domestic Violence/Sexual Offences Unit, delved into “acts of violence and their legal ramifications.” Senior Magistrate, Her Honour DaSilva-McKenzie, discussed “the pivotal role of the court in combating gender-based violence.” Clinical Psychologist Dr. Alissa Alvis shared insights on “the trauma caused by violence and its lasting effects on victims,” while community activist Camille Crichton explored “victimology and the pathways to recovery.”

Speakers emphasized the severe consequences of violence, which takes many forms—from cyberbullying to grievous bodily harm and murder. “Violence robs families of cherished providers, leaves children without nurturing parents or guardians, and inflicts profound mental and emotional scars,” said Dr. Alvis.
