Peel police say a child called 911 after an incident inside an apartment unit in Brampton that left a Vincentian woman dead and resulted in the arrest of a man.
The victim has been identified as Neisha Sam, a Vincentian residing in Canada.
First responders were called to an apartment building on Kennedy Road South, north of Steeles Avenue, at around 8:40 a.m. for a “disturbance,” Peel Regional Police said.
Inside the unit, they found Sam suffering from a “penetrating trauma,” according to Peel Regional Paramedic Services.
“She was transported by paramedics to a trauma center in life-threatening condition,” Acting Sgt. Sarah Patten told reporters at the scene. “She has since been pronounced deceased in hospital.”
Sam is believed to have been in her 40s.
A man in his 30s has been taken into custody as a suspect in the case.
“It is my understanding that they are known to each other. However, it’s still under investigation,” Patten said.
No other injuries have been reported, but police confirmed that a child was in the unit at the time of the incident.
“It is my understanding that there was a child in the residence at the time, and the child was the one who contacted police,” Patten said.
“Anyone with any information should please contact our homicide and missing persons bureau,” Patten said.
