Dr. Kishore Shallow, the NDP’s candidate for North Leeward, was speaking at a meeting in Troumaca where he outlined his plans for the constituency and stressed why change is necessary and overdue. He highlighted what he described as failings of the ULP government, including no real progress in sports, low wages, and poor healthcare.
Shallow said he has heard the cries of the North Leeward people regarding the absence of recreational sites, specifically in Troumaca. He pledged that the NDP government will remedy this by constructing a playing field and improving access to Wharf Bay — a beach greatly enjoyed by tourists — a request he promised will be fulfilled.
Agriculture and Food Security
Homing in on agricultural development in North Leeward and across SVG, Shallow promised better access to farmlands through the construction of feeder roads. He also said compensation will be granted to farmers who lost lands in Richmond. Highlighting the marketing of breadfruit chips in Barbados, a commodity readily available to Vincentians, he promised that the NDP will establish at least one agri-processing plant so farmers can have an expanded market.
Roads and Transportation
Shallow said that roads which have been neglected for too long, such as Sybil Hill and others, will be repaired in a way that ensures longevity. He further addressed issues of transportation in the North Leeward community, calling it both expensive and unreliable. The NDP’s plan, he explained, is to partner with the private sector to implement a more efficient transportation system for North Leeward and other remote areas of SVG. He added that transportation will also become more affordable under the NDP.
He also announced plans for a ferry system to connect the northern parts of the country — North Leeward and North Windward — and eventually expand to St. Lucia and Martinique. Strengthening the North, he emphasized, is a major goal of the NDP.
Tourism Development
Turning to tourism, Shallow said Cumberland will be developed with the introduction of a marina and resort, designed to be environmentally friendly. “That is going to stimulate the economy, right here in North Leeward and throughout St. Vincent and the Grenadines. I promise you that,” he declared.
He also pointed out that Troumaca Bottom Bay, which attracts many people but has no bathroom facilities, will be developed as a recreational site. He said the NDP will explore all avenues to bring Vincentians the development they deserve.
Sports Development
A comprehensive sports policy and action plan will also be implemented to benefit athletes. Shallow said this will allow many boys and girls to travel the globe representing SVG. Systems and infrastructure will be put in place for sports development, and he noted that foreign exchange will return as a result, stimulating the economy. Facilities will be upgraded with lights, and playing fields will be developed in communities such as Spring Village and Rose Hall.
Accountability
In conclusion, Dr. Shallow asked that he and the NDP be held accountable for all that they promise on their platform. He also announced the launch of his website, www.kishoreshallow.com, where the people can view all the plans for North Leeward and SVG.
