Greaves, New President Of The SVG Umpires Association

Goland Greaves was elected as the new President of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Cricket Umpires Association (SVGCUA), when the Association held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Saturday 28th September 2019, at the Bishop’s College Kingstown.

A new Executive was elected to conduct the business of the Association for the next two years. Greaves convincingly beat Maria Abbott to the post, with 13 votes to 4. Former President Roger Davis did not contest re-election. 

The other members of the Association are Michael St. Hilaire – Vice President, Afron Byam – Treasurer, Cornelius Edwards – Secretary, Kaman Green – Assistant Secretary, Selwyn Allen – Public Relations Officer (PRO), Colbert McDonald  – Committee Member.

In his acceptance speech, the former President expressed thanks for the support he received, and outlined his intention to move the Association forward. “One of my first initiatives is to get the Constitution revised, while bringing integrity back to the Association, and I will encourage all executive members to have the same mindset pertaining to integrity,” Greaves said.

He also added that he believes that his executive will endeavor to do more than what has been done during that period.


Greaves also believes that educating the umpires in the ever evolving world, is critical towards their development, and he has education as one of his top priorities. “First thing is to update our umpires with the new laws – the 2017 codes. Since then, the laws have been reviewed and, with the 2019 edition, our umpires have not been properly trained under those new laws, and one of the things I am going to do before the 2020 local cricket season, is to have at least one workshop, where our umpires will receive training pertaining to those laws. 

Umpiring is not just about the laws of the game, it also involves coping with pressure, match management, ground weather, and light; so all these areas of umpiring have to be taken seriously”. (VIN)
