Leader of the Opposition Dr Godwin Friday has expressed concern over the growing incidence or rape and other forms of sexual violence.

Speaking at his New Democratic Party (NDP) town hall meeting in New York on Sunday night, Dr Friday said he feels disgusted each time he hears repors on rape and violence in this country.

Against the backdrop of St Vincent and the Grenadines having been branded the ‘Rape Capital,’ Dr Friday said that this always lead in something bad. He said that this country does not lead in economic development or in education but there are reports which state that this country lead in rape and other sexual violence.

The president of the opposition NDP said that there is a climate of fear in the country because of the violence as everyone, except Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves, expresses that fear. He said the Prime Minister does not express that fear because he is behind by a higer wall of protection.

Dr Friday said that when it comes to the crime situation in St Vincent and the Grenadines, Prime Minister Gonsalves is “completely out of touch.”

Meanwhile, it can hardly go unnoticed the number of reports of sexual violence and rape, especially of young girls, and other violent crimes published in the press releases from the Police Public Relations and Complaints Department in recent months
