The 2019 SVGFF Inter Secondary School Football Tournament got underway on Sunday at the Victoria Park, with the Tyrone “Tweety” Spence and Scobie Taylor Shield Games. These games see a rematch between last year’s finalists in the Junior and Senior divisions respectively.

In the Tyrone “Tweety” Spence Shield game, the Central Leeward Secondary School opened the scoring early against the St. Vincent Grammar School, with a 2nd minute goal from Oryan Velox. It took the Grammar School 12 minutes to find an equalizer, thorough the boot of Saviola Burke.

It was a fairly evenly played game from then on, and though Velox was shown a second yellow card for dissent, and sent off the field, the Grammar School couldn’t benefit from their one-man advantage.

The game then went on to penalty kicks, where the Warriors of Central Leeward came away with the win with a 4-2 scoreline.

In the Scobie Taylor Shield match-up in the senior division, between the Georgetown Secondary and Dr. J.P. Eustace Memorial, the Gladiators of Georgetown came away victorious, 2 goals to one. Shemron Phillips got on the score card in the 9th minute, after rising above the defenders and heading the ball into the goal, leaving the J.P. Eustace goalkeeper stuck on his feet.

Tyrese Webb, then drew his team level, after pouncing on a 48th minute cross.

    J. P. Eustace had to play with one man short, after Zimroy Bailey was shown a red card for a dangerous tackle. Georgetown took just 8 minutes to use their extra player to their advantage, when Terranson Joseph scored.

The tournament continues in earnest on Wednesday, October 16, with Sandy Bay taking on West St. George at London, Mountain View Academy against Georgetown Secondary at Chilli, Bishop’s College facing the Intermediate High at Sion Hill, St. Martins and Grammar School clashing at Richmond Hill.

Bethel High travels to Golden Grove to play against Petit Bordel, Central Leeward sees Dr. J. P. Eustace coming to Keartons, and Troumaca goes into the Vermont Valley to take on Buccament Bay at the Hope Playing Filed.
