Kingstown, St. Vincent and the Grenadines: Early Tuesday August 4, 2020, we learned of the sudden and unexpected death of veteran journalist and broadcaster, Mr. Jerry George.

Jerry was a journalist and commentator for the past three decades. He was widely known for his radio and social media programs, such as “Business Advantage”, “Early in the Morning” , “Mek We Talk” and his morning commentary on Boom FM.

Jerry’s areas of interests and strengths were extensive. They included, among other things, communications, business, science and technology, health issues, politics and, of course, journalism. He was one of the Caribbean region’s leading political commentators. Most recently, he was among the regional journalists who very early took a keen interest in the Covid-19 pandemic and provided informative and extensive coverage of it, locally and regionally.

In Jerry’s passing, our country has lost an outstanding son. He was an invaluable resource, who used his broad knowledge and high profile to advocate tirelessly for economic development, social justice, and democracy in SVG and the wider Caribbean. Jerry went about his business with great dedication, discipline and integrity. In his work, he earned our trust and respect for his extensive knowledge and unwavering commitment to the truth. He really loved what he did, and it showed. Even when he was not working he was generously giving advice and mentoring others whenever and wherever he got the chance to do so.

Leader of the Opposition and President of the NDP, Dr. the Honourable Godwin Friday, paid tribute to him on radio and in other media, recalling his boundless generosity, commitment to service, and depth of knowledge of the politics, personalities, business matters and general affairs of the Caribbean.

“We are poorer for his passing” Dr. Friday said. “Jerry was an irreplaceable resource for us; a voice of reason and a passionate advocate of social justice and democracy. I will miss him greatly!”

We extend our deepest condolences to his widow, Valerie, his children Shara and Darryl, and his grandchildren and other family members. Our country and the region will mourn Jerry’s passing. We in the NDP have lost a dear friend.

    May he rest in peace.
