In an almost clean sweep, the Traffic Angels has successfully retained the championship trophy in the senior choir competition of the Police Cooperative Credit Union- Police Caroling Contest 2020; while the 2019 champions in the junior category – Rose Hall Police Youth Club Carolers were dethroned by debutant Calliaqua Police Youth Club Carolers. The competition was held on Friday December 18, 2020 at Central Police Station.
In what some patrons referred to as “one of the best” police caroling contest they have ever witnessed, the atmosphere at Central Police Station was very festive and electrifying – as eight (8) senior choirs and seven (7) junior choirs competed for the coveted championship trophies.
The two (2) carols that catapulted the Traffic Angels to the top position were “Oh Come All Ye Faithful” in the traditional category and “Unique Christmas in Vincy” in the original category. Western Carolers took the second position with renditions of “Oh Come! Oh Come Emmanuel” and “It’s Gonna be Okay”; while Training Carolers placed third with “Do You See What I See?” and “Rona Christmas.”
In their flamboyant outfit, the Traffic Angels were again adjudged the “Best Dress” choir. They also copped the Best Traditional Carol title and; tied with Western Carolers in the “Best Speech” category. The title for Best Original Carol was won by Western Carolers.
In the junior competition, the Calliaqua Police Youth Club Carolers won with the rendition “Santa Claus is coming to Town.” Spring Village Police Youth Club Carolers placed second with “Oh beautiful star of Bethlehem” while the third position was taken by the Chapmans Police Youth Club Carolers who sang.
For winning in their respective categories, the Traffic Angels and the Calliaqua Police Youth Club Carolers were awarded trophies compliments Standard Shippers Inc, cash prizes, cases of beverages compliments SVG Brewery and Vita Malt and; gift baskets from Global Distributors and the Eastern Caribbean Group of Companies (ECGC).
During an impromptu competition, three (3) patrons won one (1) Samsung Galaxy smart phone each compliments FLOW.
Several artistes made guest appearances. These include, Vincentian Super Stars – the Melisizwee Brothers, Lola, Urias Little and Randy “Luta” Mc Intosh. The Gazetted Officers Chior also made a guess appearance and sang “This comes to Pass” and “Put Jesus in your Christmas. The judges were Ms. Penola Ross, Mr. Aubrey Gould and Mr. Earl Paynter. The master of ceremony was Mr. Shevrell “Candy Man” Mc-Millan.
Commissioner of Police, Mr. Colin John wishes to thank all of the sponsors namely; the Police Cooperative Credit Union, Standard Shipping Inc, Global Distributors, M. Moussa and Sons, SVG Brewery and Vita Malt, FLOW (SVG), The Mustique Company Limited, Randy’s Supermarket, Eastern Caribbean Group of Companies (ECGC, members of Organizing Committee, the judges, patrons, guest artistes and everyone who would have contributed in some way to the successful hosting the 2020 Police Caroling Contest.
Coordinator of the caroling contest, Assistant Superintendent Junior Simmons disclosed that after the competition had concluded, one of the judges suggested that the RSVGPF should seek to have a regional Police Caroling Competition between the police forces in the region. According ASP Simmons “the idea is a brilliant one. It certainly will be discussed with the police hierarchy and members of the organizing committee to look at feasibility of hosting such a competition.”
The caroling contest was held under the theme “Oh What a Year! Time to Spread Some Christmas Cheer.”
