When you live on a Caribbean Island surrounded by the ocean, sometimes you don’t have to look very far to realise the potential for a great business idea.

Ayana Gregg who is from the beautiful island of Bequia located among the chain islands of St Vincent and the Grenadines has done just that with sea moss.

She uses the raw sea moss to make sea moss gel which is being sold through her new business BB Products and Services.

In an interview with Loop News Caribbean, Ayana explains that her journey with sea moss began around April/May 2020, when she along with a group of students from the CPEA class and four other teachers from the Bequia Anglican Primary School embarked on a journey to investigate the process of farming, harvesting and making products of the sea moss.

In August 2020 they journeyed to Union Island, another one of the chain islands, to witness first-hand the process involved in handling the sea moss.

“I was most intrigued by what I saw, the information learnt and especially the benefits that are derived from consuming and using the sea moss. This took me back to my past experiences when I was much younger, my parents Edward and Cornetta Gregg would treat me and my four siblings Mc Linson, Marsha, Arrian and Andino with the sea moss drink occasionally, but little did we know this was a superfood.”

Ayana says after they returned from Union Island, she did her own research on the sea moss and decided to venture out and start making some of the products that she saw and learnt about. She gets her sea moss from local farmers and supplies.

Ayana says “BB Products and Services” is her new business which she ventured out on because she wants to build a brand for herself by being creative and productive. For her, it is the first in many new ventures, making different products from the raw sea moss.

Ayana says although sea moss is nothing new to ‘us here in the islands’ the general public embraced the product and was very responsive to it.

She says some people were fascinated about it as well as wanted more insight into it and its usage.

Ayana shared some of the benefits of sea moss gel:

It contains 92 minerals out of the 102 minerals our bodies need.

    Supports a healthy heart

    Promotes good digestion

    Promotes healthy thyroid

Improves metabolism burn among other benefits
