Veronique John, a woman from St Vincent, is on trial in the UK for the brutal killings of her two children in Stoke-on-Trent. According to the prosecution, John stabbed her son Ethan over 20 times and inflicted fatal injuries on her daughter Elizabeth before attempting to kill her partner, Nathan John. After the attacks, she called 999 to report the incident, expressing a desire for the death penalty, saying, “I did it because I love my children – to protect the children.”
The court heard that John, who had recently been arrested for assaulting her husband, was in a state of boiling rage. She allegedly carried out the killings to prevent her husband from taking the children. John, who has been ruled unfit to plead, is currently being treated at a secure hospital.
The trial at Nottingham Crown Court aims to determine whether John committed the acts as charged. Jurors have been instructed to focus on the evidence objectively, despite the emotional nature of the case.
