Basseterre, St. Kitts, July 18, 2024 (SKNIS) – In a pioneering move towards sustainable development, St. Kitts and Nevis is advancing its green energy sector and technical training with the first cohort of solar panel trainees at the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College (CFBC) now set to embark on electrical vehicle (EV) mechanic training. This initiative marks a significant milestone for the Caribbean Centre of Excellence in Research, Innovation and Workforce Training (CRIWT) project, launched on April 9, 2024.

Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew, during a recent press engagement, lauded the progress of this training program, emphasizing its role in positioning the Federation at the forefront of the green energy revolution. “Electric vehicles are the future, and St. Kitts and Nevis is poised to lead. Our comprehensive approach ensures that as we transition to sustainable energy, we are also equipping our people with the necessary skills to thrive in this new era,” stated Dr. Drew.

The Prime Minister noted that the first batch of electric vehicles is expected to arrive within weeks, after which the CFBC will commence specialized training for mechanics. This strategic move is designed to create a seamless integration of green technology and workforce readiness, underpinning the nation’s commitment to sustainable growth.

Dr. Drew underscored the broader impact of reducing energy costs, highlighting benefits that span individuals, industries, job markets, and social programs. “By lowering energy expenses, we enhance the overall quality of life in St. Kitts and Nevis. Our goal is a sustainable island where every sector functions cohesively, providing the best opportunities for our citizens,” he remarked.

The CRIWT project, a collaborative venture between CFBC and Green Solution International SKN Incorporated (GSI), is funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grants Programme. It aims to establish St. Kitts and Nevis as a leading hub for sustainable research, green energy innovation, and 21st-century workforce development. This initiative focuses on critical areas such as Solar PV installation and electric vehicle maintenance, setting the stage for a greener, more prosperous future.
