The Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Chess Federation continues in its quest to make the sport of Chess a more popular sport in SVG.
As part of its overall outreach and marketing approach the SVG Chess Federation will host its first ever Blitz Open Chess Championship. The event will be a one day event and will bring chess players from across Saint Vincent & the Grenadines.
Blitz Chess is a fast paced version of Chess, it is also known as speed chess and often times called Rapid chess where players have a limited time to make their moves, typically 10 minutes or less. For this Championship the SVGCF will have a time control of 30 minutes with no increment. Registration Fee is EC$20.00 adults and EC$10.00 for youths.
The Championship will take place on April 27th 2025 at Kingstown with the hosting venue being Music Centre Hall, located upstairs Music Centre Limited.
The Championship will be played in three distinct categories, namely Youth, Women and Open. Both Youth and Women players can register in the Open category if they so choose but will not be allowed to register in more than one category.
Registration is still available online and can be done using the link https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScYDmmtxjk-YKS37bnFLbB39Oybj-A8JI_30PZk4RWg0Mx-c0YUw/viewform?usp=dialog
This championship is intended to sharpen the skillset of current chess players where speed and strategy converge as players try to outfox each other within a limited period of time. This version offers your opponent very little time to protect themselves and read your possible next move and promises to be a clash of the quick but witty minds in the game.
Just like in standard Chess, the aim is to trap your opponent’s king. In Blitz Chess, though, the clock is more of a threat than ever, and you don’t want to be caught with no time left. If your time runs out and it’s possible for your opponent to mate with the pieces they have left, they win.
Following this event the SVGCF will continue its programme of distributing chess sets to educational institutions across Saint Vincent & the Grenadines and this will be followed by demonstrations and practical sessions to be coordinated between the respective school or college and the SVGCF.
It is hoped that during the summer break there will be several short summer Chess programmes on the Windward, Leeward, Kingstown and Grenadines zones aimed at maximising participation in the Chess Development Programme.
The SVGCF intends to partner with the Ministries of Sports and Education with a view of hosting the first ever interschool chess championship before the end of the 2025 calendar year.
The winning school set to represent SVG in a regional school’s championship to be spearheaded by the Windward chess grouping or as part of the WINLOT GAMES 2026.
THE SVGCF has its eyes set on the CARICOM Chess championship slated for Guyana later this year and to close off the chess calendar for 2025 with the preparations for the 2026 Tyrone Jack Memorial National Chess Championship
