Minister with responsibility for Labour, the Hon. Saboto Caesar, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening protections for workers across St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
Minister Caesar noted that the government has been actively updating labour regulations to improve workplace safety, ensure non-discriminatory policies, and extend protections to previously unregulated sectors.
“The revised regulations include an increase in the national minimum wage across all sectors,” Minister Caesar stated. “For the first time, compassionate leave and parental leave have been introduced, and the duration of maternity leave has been extended. Additionally, two new categories—call centre workers and nursing home employees—are now covered under these protections.”
He also highlighted the progress of key legislation aimed at further safeguarding workers’ rights. The Occupational Health and Safety Act (2017), already passed in Parliament, is advancing toward official proclamation. Meanwhile, the Protection of Employment Act and Labour Relations Bill have been revised and are expected to take effect once the legislative process is complete.
These developments were announced as the country joined the rest of the world in observing Labour Day on May 1, 2025, a day set aside to honour the struggles and achievements of workers globally.
