The Ministry of Health, Wellness and the Environment is alerting the public to increased levels of Saharan Dust over the next 72 hours, as forecasted by the Meteorological Services at the Argyle International Airport in their weather outlook issued Sunday, May 25th, 2025.
This dust plume is expected to create hazy conditions, reduce visibility, and limit shower activity across St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG). The Ministry is urging citizens to take necessary precautions, especially those with underlying health conditions.
Health Risks
Exposure to Saharan Dust may lead to:
Dry cough
Sore throat
Itchy, watery eyes
Sneezing
Runny nose
Persons with respiratory conditions such as asthma, chronic bronchitis, and heart disease, as well as the elderly and children, are particularly vulnerable to complications.
Recommended Protective Measures
Carry and use prescribed medications, especially asthma inhalers, at all times
Limit outdoor activities and stay indoors as much as possible
Wear protective dust masks when outdoors
Keep windows and doors closed
Use air purifiers or damp cloths to reduce indoor dust levels
Seek immediate medical attention at the nearest health facility if symptoms worsen
