The Carnival Development Corporation (CDC) is set to honour two cultural stalwarts, Mr. Robert “Patches” Knights and Mr. Roddy Dowers, for their outstanding contributions to Calypso and Steel Pan in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
President of the Calypso Association, Mr. Earl Bennett, made the announcement during a recent press conference, where he officially proposed Mr. Knights’ name to the CDC. In a follow-up interview with Asberth News Network, Bennett confirmed that the CDC wholeheartedly accepted the recommendation.
“Patches’ contribution to Calypso spans over 40 years. He has not only been an exceptional performer and musician but has also mentored numerous Calypsonians over the years,” Bennett stated. “It’s only befitting that we give him his flowers while he is alive.”
In addition to Mr. Knights, the CDC will also honour Mr. Roddy Dowers, a veteran panman who has dedicated more than 30 years of service to the Starlift Steel Orchestra. His involvement, both as a player and in the management of the band, has played a pivotal role in the development and sustainability of pan music in the country.
Meanwhile, the Carnival Bands Incorporated (CBI) has submitted three distinguished mas bands to the CDC as their nominees for recognition: Blondie Bird and Friends, Melbourne Artisans, and Beautex International. These bands have consistently demonstrated excellence in creativity, presentation, and cultural expression within the mas fraternity.
These honours are part of the CDC’s continued efforts to recognize and celebrate individuals and groups who have made significant contributions to the Vincentian cultural landscape.
