A new chapter of recovery and development has begun for the Southern Grenadines with the official opening of the new Wharf and Ferry Terminal on Canouan. The milestone was commemorated earlier today during events held across Canouan, Mayreau, and Union Island to mark the first anniversary of Hurricane Beryl.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves praised the extensive rebuilding work that has taken place on the islands, describing it as a testament to the strength of partnerships between the Government of St. Vincent and the Grenadines and private stakeholders.
Dr. Gonsalves highlighted the collaborative efforts that made the new infrastructure possible, citing the contributions of Ian Wace, the Gumbolimbo Group, BRAGSA, and various government ministries including Housing, Works, and the SVG Port Authority.
“This wharf was done with Gumbolimbo, BRAGSA, the Ministry of Housing, the Ministry of Works, the Port… I have been very impressed with the work done by everyone on Canouan—by the locals and the Gumbolimbo team, especially the Romanians,” the Prime Minister said.
He noted that Ian Wace and the Gumbolimbo Group have pledged US$25 million toward the recovery and reconstruction efforts across the Southern Grenadines, significantly aiding projects on Canouan and beyond.
Dr. Gonsalves also lauded the commitment of public servants and citizens, describing many as having done “heroic work” throughout the recovery process and continuing to do so.
The commemorative ceremonies today not only celebrated the physical rebuilding of Canouan’s critical transport infrastructure but also honored the spirit of resilience among the people of the Southern Grenadines, one year after Hurricane Beryl made landfall.
