The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Grenada says it will legalise and regulate the use of marijuana in Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique. In order to do this, the political party will have to be successful in the next general election. Political Leader Dickon Mitchell in a statement says the NDC will not just decriminalise the use of marijuana but legalise the use of marijuana and create a cannabis/marijuana industry that will provide real, big and tangible benefits for the citizens of Grenada. Mitchell said the NDC will achieve this by doing the following: By ensuring the marijuana industry is…

Fri, Jan 21, 2022(Excerpts of Dr. Friday’s Press Statement) Amidst eight cases of COVID-19 infection among government members, the ULP government has shown a lack of depth and unpreparedness in the ensuing uncertainty regarding the safety of persons in the House, as Prime Minister Gonsalves rushed to pass the Budget on Friday night. This undue haste and reckless disregard for the health and welfare of members and other workers in the House resulted in the abrupt termination of the Budget debate, before more than half the members, including seven from the Opposition, had an opportunity to make their contribution. The…

Mitchell said: “Although individual Heads of Government, myself included, have extended congratulations to Sister Mia and the Barbados Labour Party (BLP), it is important that as the current chair of this sub-regional grouping, I document our acknowledgement of the outcome of the electoral process given the historically close ties between Barbados and the OECS.” The Chairman of the OECS Authority stated the people of…

Oil prices are at their highest since 2014 and some analysts believe that oil prices will continue to rise until at least late 2023. This is very bad news for Vincentians, as so much of our electricity is still produced from oil. Many households could see their electricity bill become too high to pay. Some households could end up having their electricity supply cut off. Children of the poor should not grow up in darkness. Both the ULP and NDP regimes have failed the people of SVG by not using renewable energy for 100% of our electricity needs. Given the…

Jomo Thomas There is a lot of ignorance about the law in SVG. The Bar Association offers no help in explaining the law to the people. It does not even bother to meet. The Human Rights Association, which did so much good work when Lawyer Victor Cuffy was alive, literally died with his passing. The people are left to think it out on their own. Small wonder the level of misunderstanding of law is so high. During her address to mark the opening of the new law year, Chief Justice Janice Pereira lamented the fact that many countries in the…

Why is attaining Gender Equality in the Royal SVG Police Force so difficult? It is well documented how I feel about the management of our Police Force. In short, I think the Police Chief lacks vision and creativity. A friend told me that I am too hard on him. Sorry, I cannot accept that anyone who graduated from St. Martin’s Secondary School missed the lesson on taking responsibility and ownership for anything we get to do in life. So, when I hear the Prime Minister (PM) on the radio making excuses for the discriminatory hiring practices of the Police Force,…

by JP Schwmon #SituationUpdates “Time and time again when I expect that Vincentians would say ‘enough is enough’ we’ve seen for some reason we seem to be very docile. More than 500 Vincentians have lost their jobs; why don’t we have 500 Vincentians on the street protesting? “They’ve lost their jobs, they’ve lost their pensions [and] they’ve lost everything. If somebody is taking away your bread, they are trying to kill you. Vincentians fight for your freedom, fight for your life.” This, according to Charles Sampson, Rise Hairouna’s vice president, as he offered closing remarks at the 1-year-old NGO’s first…
