There were no immediate reports of casualties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 5.5 magnitude quake struck just before 5 a.m. Thursday (1000 GMT)\n and was centred near the town of San Diego, 165 kilometres (100 miles) \nwest of Caracas, the capital. It had a depth of 6 miles (10 kilometres) \nand was felt across seven states, along with a 5.0 magnitude aftershock a\n few minutes later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Interior Minister Nestor Reverol said there were no major damages or \ncasualties. Photos on social media showed large cracks to some buildings\n and fallen walls and debris from historic facades in San Diego, a \nsuburb of Venezuela&#8217;s third-largest city, Valencia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While earthquakes are common in Venezuela, they tend to be less \nfrequent and not as strong as those that hit elsewhere in South America \nlike neighbouring Colombia, Chile and Peru.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Daniel Salazar said she ran nervously from bed in search of her \n76-year-old mother and found her standing next to their Christmas tree, \nwhich was swaying back and forth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;My entire body is shaking, I&#8217;m not sure if from the cold or the \nscare we experienced,&#8221; said Salazar, who was standing outside her \nhigh-rise Caracas apartment before dawn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The quake follows a magnitude 7.3 earthquake in August \u2014 the \ncountry&#8217;s strongest in more than a century \u2014 that rattled residents \nacross Venezuela and was felt as far away as in neighbouring Colombia \nand Guyana.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LOOPTT &#8211; A strong earthquake jolted Venezuelans from their sleep early Thursday, forcing residents in the capital to evacuate buildings in their pyjamas before sunrise.
