GEORGETOWN GUYANA – The PPP General Secretary said if the elections are not held within 90 days, then it would be clear that “this government becomes unconstitutional.\u00a0 One day after the ninety days and they become unconstitutional and we have made it clear that the international community would be informed of this and we have made it clear that any engagement with this government, regarding disbursement of loan, grants, any contracts concluded by the government in that period would be considered illegal”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Opposition\n Leader Bharrat Jagdeo wants the coalition government to resign from \noffice now and not continue being in office as if its business as usual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said the coalition government lost the no confidence vote in the \nNational Assembly and therefore needs to follow the Constitution and \nresign from office. He said if there is any role government ministers \nshould be playing now, it should be that of a caretaker government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jagdeo said \u201cthis government has lost a no-confidence motion. The \nConstitution has provided the clear prescription. You resign upon \nlosing. They should have resigned by now\u2026.resign, resign now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mr. Jagdeo made the comments this afternoon after his party held an executive meeting at its Freedom House headquarters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The PPP General Secretary said if the elections are not held within \n90 days, then it would be clear that \u201cthis government becomes \nunconstitutional. One day after the ninety days and they become \nunconstitutional and we have made it clear that the international \ncommunity would be informed of this and we have made it clear that any \nengagement with this government, regarding disbursement of loan, grants,\n any contracts concluded by the government in that period would be \nconsidered illegal\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jagdeo also told reporters this afternoon that he has written to the \nchief justice about any move by the government to approach the court to \nstay the hosting of elections. He wants his side to be heard also.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis morning we deposited a letter in the Chief Justice\u2019s office to \nsay that any attempt to seek ex-parte arrangements to stay the no \nconfidence motion, we want to be heard on it. But we believe the \njudiciary should not engage in any action that could violate what is so \nexplicit in our Constitution\u201d, the Opposition Leader said, adding that \nthe Governments needs to stop \u201cbeing like rats on a ship\u201d full of \ndesperation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Meanwhile, Mr. Jagdeo also announced that his party is preparing for \nelections within ninety days and has started the process to find its \npresidential candidate. He said although he is already leaning towards \none candidate who he did not name, the process will be done by secret \nballot.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
