Heavy rains and gusty winds during the last twenty four hours resulted in a number of landslides,
\nblocked roads, fallen trees, power outages, and damages to homes and other infrastructure. A total of 5
\ninches (approximately 25 mm) of rainfall was recorded by some stations across mainland St. Vincent
\nduring that period of time.
\nDirector of the National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO) Michelle Forbes confirmed
\nthat over thirty (30) communities have been impacted. One Emergency Shelter remains open with one
\nfamily and the National Emergency Operation Centre of NEMO is still partially activated.<\/p>\n
The Damage Assessment Sub-Committee of the National Emergency Management Organisation met today at 10:30 a.m. and seven teams of assessors from the Ministry of Transport and Works, the
\nMinistry of Housing Informal Humans Settlements, Physical Planning, Land and Surveys, the Ministry of National Mobilisation, Social Development etc. the Housing and Land Development Corporation and the Roads, Buildings & General Services Authority (BRAGSA) are currently conducting damage
\nassessment in the affected areas.<\/p>\n
According to information received from the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Meteorological Services,
\nbreezy conditions, light to heavy showers, periods of intermittent rain and isolated thunderstorms are
\nanticipated across St. Vincent and the Grenadines tonight into tomorrow due to instability associated
\nwith the tail end of a tropical wave and a favourable upper level environment. Rainfall accumulations of 75 mm (approximately 3 inches) with isolated higher amounts in mountainous areas are possible withinthe next twenty four hours.
\nWind speeds of approximately 20-40 km\/h or 12-25 mp\/h with higher gusts are expected to continue across St. Vincent and the Grenadines this afternoon and tonight.<\/p>\n
Due to the saturated nature of the soils, any additional rainfall accompanied by these winds can cause additional flooding and further damages.<\/p>\n
As a result of this, the Flash Flood Warning for St. Vincent and the Grenadines has been extended until
\nfurther notice<\/p>\n
The National Emergency Management Organisation is also urging all residents to continue to exercise caution, especially persons living in low lying areas, areas close to river banks and also areas prone to
\nlandslide and flooding.<\/p>\n
Residents are asked to take note and to take all the necessary precautions to save lives and protect<\/p>\n
property and to report all damages to NEMO at 456-2975 or 458-6366.
