{"id":1944,"date":"2019-01-08T14:36:13","date_gmt":"2019-01-08T14:36:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/annsvg.com\/?p=1944"},"modified":"2019-01-08T14:36:19","modified_gmt":"2019-01-08T14:36:19","slug":"woman-given-erectile-dysfunction-cream-for-dry-eye","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/annsvg.com\/index.php\/2019\/01\/08\/woman-given-erectile-dysfunction-cream-for-dry-eye\/","title":{"rendered":"Woman given erectile dysfunction cream for dry eye"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(BBC) A woman has suffered chemical injuries after she was mistakenly prescribed erectile dysfunction cream for a dry eye condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The woman, from Glasgow, had to be treated at A&amp;E after she was given Vitaros cream instead of the eye lubricant VitA-POS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her experience&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/casereports.bmj.com\/content\/11\/1\/bcr-2018-227468\">is detailed in December&#8217;s BMJ Case Reports journal.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The report calls for doctors to use block capitals in handwritten prescriptions to avoid errors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The woman was given a handwritten prescription for VitA-POS, a liquid paraffin lubrication, for treatment of severe dry eyes and corneal erosions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mix-up happened between her GP and pharmacist, where she was issued with Vitaros, an erectile dysfunction cream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After using it she suffered eye pain, blurred vision, redness and swollen eyelid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mild chemical injury to her eye was treated in hospital with topical antibiotics, steroids and lubricants, which cleared it up in a few days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr Magdalena Edington, from Glasgow&#8217;s Tennent Institute of Ophthalmology, wrote the report for the December edition of BMJ Case Reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In it, she said: &#8220;Prescribing errors are common, and medications with similar names and packaging increase risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;However, it is unusual in this case that no individual, including the patient, general practitioner or dispensing pharmacist, questioned erectile dysfunction cream being prescribed to a female patient, with ocular application instructions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We believe this to be an important issue to report, to enhance awareness and promote safe prescribing skills.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although many prescriptions are digitised rather than handwritten, she wants to raise awareness that medications with similar spellings exist and encourage prescribers &#8220;to ensure that handwritten prescriptions are printed in block capital letters (including the hyphen with VitA-POS) to avoid similar scenarios in the future&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/health-43161929\">Data released last year<\/a>&nbsp;suggested GPs, pharmacists, hospitals and care homes may be making 237 million prescription errors a year &#8211; the equivalent of one mistake for every five drugs issued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The errors include wrong medications being given, incorrect doses dispensed and delays in medication being administered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study said most caused no problems, but in more than a quarter of cases the mistakes could have caused harm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Robbie Turner, Director of Pharmacy at the Royal Pharmaceutical Society said the organisation was &#8220;sorry&#8221; to hear about what happened to this patient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Mistakes are taken very seriously by pharmacists, who work hard to ensure patient safety, knowing the harm they can cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Most prescriptions these days are electronic, removing errors due to handwriting. Whatever the particular reasons for this error, collaboration between pharmacists and prescribers makes care safer and helps reduce mistakes.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/13E83\/production\/_103693518_086b2036-0a30-4a6f-a4a0-94c46832b58f.jpg\" alt=\"Presentational grey line\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Doctors are given guidance on their handwriting in&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhs.nhs.uk\/media\/suhtideal\/doctors\/saferprescribingworkbook\/section1-prescriptionwriting.pdf\">a NHS training manual<\/a>, which includes this test:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Write out the names of the following drugs in your usual handwriting. Get a non-medically trained friend to transcribe them.
