We can\u2019t detect anything,\u201d said Ravindra Gupta, a professor and HIV biologist who co-led a team of doctors treating the man. He described his patient as \u201cfunctionally cured\u201d and \u201cin remission\u201d, but cautioned: \u201cIt\u2019s too early to say he\u2019s cured.\u201c<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0px0px0.75rem; padding:0px;\">The man is being called \u201cthe<span> <\/span><a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk\/london\" data-link-name=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" style=\"background: transparent; touch-action: manipulation; color: rgb(171, 6, 19); cursor: pointer; text-decoration: none !important; border-bottom: 0.0625rem solid rgb(220, 220, 220); transition: border-color 0.15s ease-out 0s;\">London<\/a>patient\u201d, in part because his case is similar to the first known case of a functional cure of HIV, \u201cthe Berlin patient\u201d \u2013 American Timothy Brown, who underwent similar treatment in Germany in 2007 which also cleared his HIV. He is still HIV-free.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0px0px0.75rem; padding:0px;\">The Aids pandemic has killed about 35 million people worldwide since it began in the 1980s and about 37 million people are infected with HIV. Scientific research into the complex virus has led to the development of drug combinations that can keep it at bay in most patients.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0px0px0.75rem; padding:0px;\">Gupta, now at Cambridge University, treated the London patient when he was working at University College London.
