Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, the Hon. Keisal Peters, has extended wishes of
\npeace and prosperity to Taiwan on its 112 th \u00a0anniversary, celebrated on October 10 th , annually, as
\n\u201cDouble Ten Day\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe people of Taiwan are strong and resilient people\u201d, said Peters while delivering
\ncongratulatory remarks at a reception to observe \u201cDouble Ten Day\u201d, held on Monday 9 th
\nOctober, at the Kingstown Baptist Church. \u201cHaving celebrated 112 th \u00a0years shows the fortitude of
\na people that believe in their country and its system\u201d she added.<\/p>\n
The Foreign Affairs Minister noted that SVG and Taiwan established diplomatic relations in
\n1981, under the leadership of the late Robert Milton Cato, and the relationship has blossomed.
\nThroughout the relationship, she said, St. Vincent and the Grenadines has advocated for Taiwan
\nto be involved in various international organizations, one of them being the United Nations. \u201cThe
\npeople of Taiwan deserve the right to have their voices heard in all corners of the international
\ncommunity without hindrances, without pressure or threats from others", said Hon. Peters.<\/p>\n
Hon. Keisal Peters said, Taiwan\u2019s involvement, like any other country, is of benefit to the
\ninternational system and this should not be ignored. She pointed out that during the Covid-19
\nPandemic, Taiwan stood on the world stage assisting in financial relief and donations to many
\ncountries, including SVG.\u00a0She said Taiwan also assisted with the clean-up of ash following the
\neruptions of the La Soufriere Volcano in April, 2021, and has also purchased a monitoring

system to monitor activity at the volcano.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cTaiwan is the quintessential example of a good friend
\nin bad times\u201d,\u00a0said Peters.<\/p>\n
Hon. Peters is this country\u2019s first female foreign affairs minister, and also the youngest person
\nappointed to lead the ministry. She affirmed that \u201cSVG is proud to be a part of the [112 th ]
\ncelebration which is a profound occasion that affords Vincentians the opportunity to stand in
\nsolidarity with our brothers and sisters in Taiwan.\u201d In 2019, she noted, SVG established an
\nembassy in Taiwan because the Government of SVG trusts the Taiwanese government, its
\ninstitutions and its people.<\/p>\n
The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade also pointed out that Taiwan has been present
\nat every stage of this country\u2019s development following its independence in 1979, and both
\ncountries have cooperated in many aspects such as health, technology and security,
\ninfrastructural development, education,\u00a0human resource development \u00a0and women\u2019s
