Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) experienced a significant reduction in overall crime in 2024, according to Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Trevor \u201cBuju\u201d Bailey, who oversees crime-fighting operations.
While the nation saw 55 homicides in 2023 and 54 in 2024, ACP Bailey emphasized that broader crime statistics reveal a positive trend. Speaking on NBC Radio’s On the Beat program on January 7, he highlighted a steady decrease in overall criminal activity.
In 2023, SVG recorded 4,134 criminal incidents. However, by November 2024, that number had fallen to 3,485\u2014representing a clear decline in crime across various categories.
\u201cWhile homicides are deeply concerning, they are not the sole indicator of the nation\u2019s crime situation,\u201d ACP Bailey stated. \u201cIt\u2019s important to focus on the broader picture, where we are seeing significant reductions in many other areas of criminal activity.\u201d
He noted that February 2024 saw the highest number of recorded crimes, with 421 incidents. However, crime steadily decreased in the months that followed: March recorded 325 incidents, April 337, May 333, and June 312. The downward trend continued into the latter half of the year, with 306 incidents reported in July, 261 in August, 311 in September, 291 in October, and 294 in November.
ACP Bailey also acknowledged the ongoing challenge of firearm-related offences but expressed gratitude for the dedication of officers within the Royal Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force (RSVGPF).
\u201cThis data challenges the perception that crime is spiraling out of control,\u201d Bailey said. \u201cThe numbers show progress, and while there is still work to be done, we are heading in the right direction.\u201d
