{"id":4218,"date":"2019-06-05T10:45:34","date_gmt":"2019-06-05T10:45:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/annsvg.com\/?p=4218"},"modified":"2019-06-05T10:45:44","modified_gmt":"2019-06-05T10:45:44","slug":"church-leader-charged-with-child-rape-in-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/annsvg.com\/index.php\/2019\/06\/05\/church-leader-charged-with-child-rape-in-us\/","title":{"rendered":"Church leader charged with child rape in US"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BBC- The leader of an international religious <g class=\"gr_ gr_4 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling multiReplace\" id=\"4\" data-gr-id=\"4\">organisation<\/g> is being held in the US on charges of human trafficking, child rape <g class=\"gr_ gr_3 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation only-ins replaceWithoutSep\" id=\"3\" data-gr-id=\"3\">and<\/g> other felonies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Naas\u00f3n Joaqu\u00edn Garc\u00eda, who heads La Luz del Mundo (The Light of the World), was arrested after arriving at Los Angeles airport, California prosecutors said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr Garc\u00eda, known as &#8220;the Apostle&#8221; among his followers, and his three female co-defendants are facing 26 charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">La Luz del Mundo said it was confident Mr Garc\u00eda would be proven innocent<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The organisation, which has headquarters in Mexico, says it has more than a million followers around the globe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In recent years its influence has spread to the US, particularly in parts of California with large Hispanic populations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are the charges?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/oag.ca.gov\/news\/press-releases\/attorney-general-becerra-announces-arrest-naas%C3%B3n-joaqu%C3%ADn-garc%C3%ADa-leader-religious\">In a statement released on Tuesday<\/a>, California Attorney General Xavier Becerra said Mr Garc\u00eda, a Mexican national, and the three women allegedly committed 26 felonies in southern California between 2015 and 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These included human trafficking, production of child sex abuse images and forcible rape of a minor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The defendants are accused of coercing minor girls into performing sex acts. The girls were reportedly told that if they went against the wishes of &#8220;the Apostle&#8221; they would be going against God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Crimes like those alleged&#8230; have no place in our society. Period,&#8221; Mr Becerra said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We must not turn a blind eye to sexual violence and trafficking in our state.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr Garc\u00eda&#8217;s co-defendants have been named as Alondra Ocampo, Azalea Rangel Mel\u00e9ndez and Susana Medina Oaxaca.
