Regardless of political affiliation, we should all be guided by common sense, integrity, and sound judgment. Yesterday, the Opposition announced four new measures they hope to implement if elected to govern SVG\u2014initiatives they believe are in the best interest of our people. Unfortunately, the responses that followed were disappointing. Individuals we once viewed as forward-thinking, exposed, and rational suddenly allowed politics to distort their ability to reason.
Comments such as \u201cmek baby for $500,\u201d \u201creward for sperm donors,\u201d and \u201c$500 to the breeders\u201d are not only careless, they are degrading and unworthy of who we claim to be. When we reduce national policy discussions to jokes and insults, we are not demonstrating intelligence\u2014we are exposing a lack of maturity. We must elevate our conversations, think critically, and allow integrity to guide how we respond.
It is important to note that bonuses or grants to new mothers are not unusual within the Caribbean. Many islands currently offer similar one-off maternity grants through their social security systems. I firmly believe mothers deserve this additional support, which\u2014combined with the existing NIS payment\u2014would total $1,160.00. We must also consider women who are not registered with NIS due to unemployment. For them, this support could make a significant difference at a financially demanding time.
Not every idea should be attacked simply because it did not come from the party we prefer. Sometimes the positive impact outweighs the imperfections others attempt to attach to it. We should be equally supportive of assistance offered to families, just as many are supportive of the $500 reward given annually to students who excel in their final external examinations. These initiatives are meant to uplift households, encourage progress, and strengthen our nation.
At the end of the day, we are all Vincentians. We should desire progress for each citizen, without filtering compassion through political bias. This climate of hostility, aggression, and \u201cwar at all costs\u201d must end. Let us respond with intelligence, fairness, and empathy. Our character should reflect the nation we aspire to build\u2014not the political noise we allow to divide\u00a0 us <\/p>\n\n\n\n
