KINGSTOWN, April 17, 2026 – As St. Vincent and the Grenadines marks the fifth anniversary of the 2021 La Soufri\u00e8re eruption, the National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO) hosted a field trip to Wallibou and Roseau valleys with students from the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Community College. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The activity formed part of Volcano Awareness Month and involved CAPE Geography, Environmental Science, and Green Engineering classes. It gave students a rare opportunity to connect classroom theory with real\u2011world observation of the island\u2019s dynamic landscape. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Guided by Dr. Richard Robertson of the UWI Seismic Research Centre and Ms. Leanka Henry, the students explored how volcanic processes have shaped St. Vincent\u2019s topography and how fluvial activity continues to influence the WallibouRiver. In the Roseau valley, they examined geomorphological features including lahars, pyroclastic density currents, and ashfall deposits, noting variations in clast size, shape, composition, and depositional patterns. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lecturers Dr. Allanson Cruickshank, Mr. Utamu Rose, and Dr. Laurette Prince accompanied the students, reinforcing the educational value of the exercise. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The initiative highlighted the importance of ongoing education in building national resilience.
