{"id":45427,"date":"2026-05-05T10:27:59","date_gmt":"2026-05-05T14:27:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/annsvg.com\/?p=45427"},"modified":"2026-05-05T10:27:59","modified_gmt":"2026-05-05T14:27:59","slug":"new-labour-laws-coming-minister-tells-workers-on-may-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/annsvg.com\/index.php\/2026\/05\/05\/new-labour-laws-coming-minister-tells-workers-on-may-day\/","title":{"rendered":"New Labour Laws Coming, Minister Tells Workers on May Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Kingstown, St Vincent and the Grenadines<\/strong> &#8211; Workers across St Vincent and the Grenadines marched through the capital on Thursday to mark Labour Day, as the government pledged new legislation aimed at strengthening workers\u2019 rights.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The march and rally, organised by the National Labour Congress under the theme \u201cUnity and Solidarity\u201d, brought together members of several trade unions in observance of International Workers\u2019 Day on 1 May.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Addressing the gathering, Labour Minister Laverne Gibson-Velox said the government remained committed to improving protections for workers through legislative reform.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe are actively working to advance key pieces of legislation, including the Labour Relations Bill, which will soon be brought forward as an Act, and the Occupational Safety and Health Act,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She added that efforts were also under way to modernise existing labour laws, noting that the Protection of Employment Act would be updated \u201cto reflect the realities of today\u2019s workforce\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The annual Labour Day activities highlight the role of organised labour and provide a platform for workers to raise concerns about wages, working conditions and job security.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International Workers\u2019 Day, observed globally on 1 May, has its origins in the late 19th-century labour movement, particularly the campaign for an eight-hour workday in the United States.
