The New Democratic Party (NDP) has been in office for five months, and has demonstrated strong leadership and resilience despite numerous challenges. Throughout this period, the party has made significant strides in advancing its policy agenda, addressing key issues, and working diligently to serve the needs of Vincentians.<\/p>\n
Prime Minister Honourable Dr. Godwin Friday, and his team deserve commendation for the tremendous progress achieved in such a short period in government. The NDP has already fulfilled several key promises, including delivering a VAT-free shopping day, providing bonuses for public sector workers, increasing Public Assistance to $500, and reinstating workers who were unfairly dismissed by the previous Unity Labour Party (ULP) government for refusing the COVID-19 vaccine. These accomplishments demonstrate the government\u2019s commitment to delivering tangible benefits to the people of St Vincent and the Grenadines.<\/p>\n
IMF Visit<\/strong><\/p>\n Recently, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) visited St. Vincent and the Grenadines for its annual Article IV consultation and issued a series of recommendations reflecting the dire state of the country\u2019s economy. The economic situation we face today was created by the former ULP government led by Dr. Ralph Gonsalves, whose reckless policies and mismanagement have plunged the nation into this economic crisis. It is clear that the current mess is a direct result of their failed leadership, and now, the country must confront the fallout of their negligence.<\/p>\n The NDP inherited the following from the ULP government: a staggering national debt of $3.5 billion and an alarming debt-to-GDP ratio of 113%. The IMF report states that the <\/em>debt ratio rose by 45 percentage points of GDP since 2019, with about half of the increase occurring in the last two years, reaching 113 percent of GDP in 2025.<\/p>\n The IMF release also mentions that the<\/em> country has been at high risk of debt distress since 2016. Debt distress refers to a situation in which a country faces significant difficulty in servicing its debt obligations, such as paying interest or principal on loans, bonds, or other financial instruments. This condition often arises when the government cannot generate sufficient income or cash flow to meet its financial commitments.<\/p>\n Following the IMF visit, the government\u2019s position is not to raise taxes on Vincentians, but to enforce existing laws, modernize the system, improve compliance, and grow the economy responsibly. This is honest leadership in difficult circumstances.<\/p>\n \u201cI have always told you exactly how things are, and the IMF\u2019s visit has made clear the financial reality we must now confront. We face real constraints, due to poor fiscal management by the previous government, but my government\u2019s priority is not to raise taxes on Vincentians. Our task is to make the system work better, enforce existing laws, manage expenditure responsibly, protect the vulnerable, and grow our way forward.\u201d Prime Minister Honourable Dr Godwin Friday.<\/p>\n The hypocrisy of Gonsalves <\/strong><\/p>\n Would you believe that the one-man ULP is now blaming the NDP for the mess that he himself created as leader of the ULP? This is the height of political dishonesty. He has no shame in trying to shift the blame for his failures to the NDP government.<\/p>\n Leader of the Opposition, Dr Ralph Gonsalves, and his surrogates are deliberately trying to deceive Vincentians by peddling a false narrative about IMF driven austerity. The truth is that since 2016, the IMF warned the government that our debt was spiraling out of control and was becoming unsustainable. Instead of heeding the warning, the ULP government chose to ignore the signs and continued borrowing recklessly, even bragging about putting a hook in the gills of Vincentians, after it was reported that St Vincent and the Grenadines owed Taiwan $577 million. Their reckless fiscal policies have only deepened our economic suffering.<\/p>\n The Leader of the Opposition now wants to pretend to be the defender of the poor and working class, but the harsh financial realities facing St. Vincent and the Grenadines today are a direct result of the twenty-five (25) years of reckless mismanagement by him and his son as finance minister. They created the economic crisis, and now they want Vincentians to believe their dishonest scare campaign. Vincentians must see through this deception and reject the false narrative from the very people who created the problem.<\/p>\n Fear-mongering is not leadership, and Dr. Ralph Gonsalves continues to rely on his divisive, archaic political style, fueling fear and hatred among Vincentians. That was his mantra during the 2025 general elections, and it failed. Vincentians must reject Gonsalves\u2019 style of politics once and for all, because it only serves to divide and diminish our nation. His tactics of fear-mongering, divisiveness, and manipulation have done enough damage to our unity and progress.<\/p>\n What is even more astonishing is that the Leader of the Opposition, the very person responsible for the damage inflicted on St. Vincent and the Grenadines’ economy, now has the audacity to offer advice. His hypocrisy knows no bounds. Instead of taking responsibility for his destructive actions, he seeks to play the role of the expert, as if his hands are clean. It is a disgrace that he would try to lecture us on economic recovery when he is the architect of the chaos we are struggling to recover from.<\/p>\n Dr. Ralph Gonsalves has failed the people of St Vincent and the Grenadines. That\u2019s why Vincentians delivered a decisive blow to the ULP by voting overwhelmingly for the NDP. Vincentians no longer want to hear from him; his words now lack meaning and relevance.
