The Royal Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force (RSVGPF) says it has launched immediate investigations into incidents involving police officers following the circulation of videos that have sparked public concern across the country.<\/p>\n
In a statement released on Thursday, May 21st, the RSVGPF acknowledged the public reaction to the footage and stated that brutality, unlawful force, intimidation, humiliation, or any abuse of police authority has no place within the organization.<\/p>\n
The statement said the contents of the videos \u201crequire no description\u201d from the police force, noting that the public had already seen enough to expect a clear response.<\/p>\n
The Commissioner of Police strongly condemned any conduct by officers that falls outside the lawful and professional standards expected of members of the organization.<\/p>\n
According to the statement, police authority exists to protect the public, preserve order and enforce the law, and should never be used to punish, degrade or overpower individuals beyond what is legally permitted.<\/p>\n
The police force warned that when officers cross that line, the consequences extend beyond the persons directly affected.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen an officer crosses that line, the damage is national,\u201d the statement said. \u201cIt harms the person affected, weakens public trust, and stains the work of officers who serve with discipline, courage, and restraint.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Commissioner has ordered what the force described as thorough and fair investigations into the incidents captured in the videos. Police said the process will be guided by evidence and will include reviews of the recordings, surrounding circumstances, witness accounts and the conduct of the officers involved.<\/p>\n
The RSVGPF also appealed to the public to allow the investigative process to unfold fully before final conclusions are reached.<\/p>\n
\u201cA video may raise serious questions, but a proper investigation must establish the full facts before final decisions are made,\u201d the statement added.<\/p>\n
The police force stated that where criminal conduct is established, the full force of the law will be applied. It further warned that where disciplinary breaches are proven, internal disciplinary proceedings will be pursued firmly.<\/p>\n
The statement stressed that no officer would be protected because of rank, assignment, friendship, seniority or uniform.<\/p>\n
Police also confirmed that the High Command will examine whether the incidents point to broader concerns involving supervision, training, command oversight or operational judgment.<\/p>\n
According to the RSVGPF, corrective action will be taken wherever necessary based on the findings of the investigations.<\/p>\n
The police force acknowledged that public confidence has been damaged and stated that rebuilding trust would require more than public statements.<\/p>\n
