The system eliminates traditional transfer delays and provides immediate access to funds regardless of the financial institution involved. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The launch was marked by a national ceremony hosted by the Central Bank of Barbados, where Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley conducted the first transaction on the system by sending a payment to a Barbadian small business. The event was streamed live to the public and celebrated as a major milestone in the modernization of the country\u2019s financial infrastructure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Developed under the leadership of the Central Bank of Barbados, BiMPay allows users to transfer money using mobile phone numbers, email addresses and QR codes through a dedicated digital wallet. The platform also supports direct account-to-account transfers between participating banks and credit unions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At launch, all six commercial banks in Barbados and the island\u2019s three largest credit unions were connected to the system\u2019s payment rail, creating a unified network capable of processing transactions within seconds. Seven institutions were also connected to the BiMPay digital wallet platform from day one, with additional institutions expected to join in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Governor of the Central Bank of Barbados, Dr. Kevin Greenidge, described the development as a transformational moment for the country\u2019s financial sector, noting that payments that previously took hours or even days can now be completed instantly at any time of day. He said the initiative lays the foundation for continued innovation in Barbados\u2019 payment ecosystem. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The instant payment system forms part of a broader strategy to modernize Barbados\u2019 financial services sector, improve financial inclusion and support economic growth. The platform allows transactions between individuals, businesses and government entities, while also providing access to digital payment services for users who may not have traditional bank accounts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Financial experts have pointed to the success of similar instant payment systems around the world, particularly Brazil\u2019s PIX platform, as evidence of how real-time payments can transform commerce and reduce dependence on cash transactions. Barbados now joins more than 100 countries that have implemented national instant payment systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Early public response has been strong.
