{"id":5488,"date":"2019-08-12T18:36:52","date_gmt":"2019-08-12T18:36:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/annsvg.com\/?p=5488"},"modified":"2019-08-12T18:36:59","modified_gmt":"2019-08-12T18:36:59","slug":"trump-targets-legal-migrants-who-get-food-aid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/annsvg.com\/index.php\/2019\/08\/12\/trump-targets-legal-migrants-who-get-food-aid\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump targets legal migrants who get food aid"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BBC &#8211; US President Donald Trump&#8217;s  administration is to make it more difficult for poorer legal migrants to  extend their visas or gain permanent resident status (a green card).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rule targets migrants who rely on public benefits, such as food aid or public housing, for more than a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their applications will be rejected if the government decides they are likely to rely on public assistance in future. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefings-statements\/president-donald-j-trump-taking-action-protect-social-safety-net-promote-self-sufficiency-non-citizens\/\">The rule change would reinforce &#8220;ideals of self-sufficiency,&#8221;<\/a> officials said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/public-inspection.federalregister.gov\/2019-17142.pdf\">The new regulation, known as a &#8220;public charge rule&#8221;, was published in the Federal Register on Monday<\/a> and will take effect on 15 October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who will be affected?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Immigrants who are already permanent residents in the US are unlikely to be affected by the rule change. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also does not apply to refugees and asylum applicants<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But applicants for visa extensions, green cards or US citizenship will be subject to the change. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those\n who do not meet income standards or who are deemed likely to rely on \nbenefits such as Medicaid (government-run healthcare) or housing \nvouchers in future may be blocked from entering the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those already in the US could also have their applications rejected.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An estimated 22 million legal residents in the US are without citizenship, and many of these are likely to be affected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Civil\n rights groups have said the move unfairly targets low-income \nimmigrants. The National Immigration Law Center (NILC) has said it will \nsue the Trump administration to stop the regulation from taking effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But\n the White House said the current system favours immigrants with family \nties rather than those who &#8220;are self-sufficient and do not strain our \npublic resources&#8221;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BBC &#8211; US President Donald Trump&#8217;s administration is to make it more difficult for poorer legal migrants to extend their visas or gain permanent resident status (a green card).
