St Kitts and Nevis’ Tourism Minister, Lindsay Grant, has been named as the Caribbean Tourism Minister of the Year by Caribbean Journal.

In announcing his selection as the top-performing Tourism Minister, Caribbean Journal said: “Grant quickly and nimbly managed St Kitts and Nevis’ tourism fortunes, working with health officials to tighten and loosen restrictions as necessary, compiling an industry-leading set of cruise protocols and helping steer the small destination through the most challenging periods of the pandemic, all while maintaining the twin-island federation’s position as a calm oasis of Caribbean charm.”

In a February 2020 interview with Loop Caribbean, Grant said that his ministry was on “high alert” to ensure COVID-19 will not catch the country off-guard.

At that time, the island was suspected of being a port of call for an infected person aboard the Anthem of the Seas cruise ship.

“We called Royal Caribbean directly and asked them for answers and an indication as to whether or not a news item from CNN was correct because we were very annoyed over the fact that this report had come out and we were not alerted. We got the information that the CDC after their evaluation had said that everything was negative and there was no concern,” he said.

The hard work of Grant and St Kitts and Nevis’ public health authority continues to make the island an attractive place for tourists.

Approximately 41,000 cruise passengers are expected to visit St Kitts and Nevis this month on 60 cruise calls.
