Chief Magistrate Rechanne Browne has committed 19 year old Kesean Cain of Diamonds to stand trial for the
murder of 48 year old Brenda Layne of Chauncey.
At a sitting of the Serious Offences Court on Monday, the Chief Magistrate found there was enough prima facie
evidence presented for a case to be heard at the High Court before a judge and jury. The Chief Magistrate’s
decision came by way of paper committal, where statements and other exhibit evidence were presented to the
court.
Layne, a security guard, was stabbed in the neck on the morning of August 20th, 2018, in the area of Gibson’s
Building Supplies at Lower Bay Street, Kingstown. She died shortly after.
She was at the time awaiting transportation to go home, having finished a night shift at Vinlec where she was
stationed for years.
The stabbing incident was captured on CCTV. A video footage showed a male attacking her from behind and running away instantly.
