The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men’s soccer team learned on Monday that Kyle Edwards was selected by the Houston Dynamo in the fourth round (86thoverall) of the 2020 Major League Soccer SuperDraft.
Edwards marks the first player in program history to be selected in the MLS SuperDraft. Last week, Edwards signed a professional contract with the RGV FC Toros, who serve as the hybrid affiliate of the Houston Dynamo in the United Soccer League.
Edwards, who earned his second straight nod on the All-WAC First Team last season, led the Vaqueros in goals (7), points (16), and shots (50) in 2019. His seven goals were the eighth most in the WAC and his 16 points ranked him ninth in the WAC.
Edwards will go down as one of the best in program history, wrapping up his career with the Vaqueros with the second most career goals (21) and career points (49) while setting the program record for career shots (114).
Prior to the 2019 season, Edwards was named the WAC Preseason Player of the Year while also being named to the Hermann Trophy Watch List. Edwards is also a two-time United Soccer Coaches All-Far West Region honoree.
Edwards has represented SVG at the Under-17, Under- 20 and seniors levels.
His last appearance was in August 2019, when he played for the senior team in a friendly international against Trinidad and Tobago at the Chili Playing Field.
Locally, Edwards has played for System Three and for Barrouallie league team in competitions put on by the SVG Football Federation.
