On Saturday 1st February, 2020 singing enthusiasts had an opportunity to be taught some helpful vocal drills and singing techniques that can improve their vocal journey by a world class vocalist, vocal trainer, and author from Barbados — Kellie Cadougan.
Ms. Kellie Cadogan who is a transformational vocal trainer and coach took time out of her schedule after performing last Wednesday night at De Reef, Bequia, as part of the 2020 Bequia Music Festival line up where she dazzled patrons with her eclectic range and vocal agility. Amongst her most notable accolades she is an award winning singer in the area of Jazz; an entrepreneur and show producer of the annual show “Walkin’ In My Own Shoes”, the music representative of London College of Music and is a lecturer at the Barbados Community College and the University of the West Indies.
Cadougan presented a FREE Jazz & Performance Workshop for vocalists, at the CDC conference room at Victoria Park. Attendees were taught practical steps to help take their voice to the next level, from interactive vocal warmups & exercises, posture, diction and vocal agility. Special focus was also made on song interpretation & the effects on vocal performance.
Participants were expected to prepare a song of choice for performance/vocal critiques on a first come basis. This event saw a vast age range from attendees between the ages of 8 – 50+.
This worthwhile initiative was organised by past student Darrien Ollivierre and facilitated by Nisha Hope (also a past student of Ms. Cadougan) and Brian Maloney (local singer).
Darrien commented that Kellie’s insight was “invaluable and I trust that what was shared this afternoon would be of lasting benefit to everyone. One of the refreshing things that she brought to this session, is her outlook on life, there were so many insightful, thought provoking, and inspiring little gems scattered throughout. In other words, it was beyond the mechanics of vocal work; it was looking also at positivity as a lifestyle that would fuel your own musical and life expression.”
He further commended the attendees saying “You were a wonderful group who supported each other, engaged actively, and had fun. The persons who performed were wonderful. Keep pushing in your journey and give the real YOU! Don’t shrink back.”
Although attendees would have been afforded such valuable guidance from this interactive session persons were reminded that they need to “incorporate the necessary bits” into their routine and PRACTICE their craft as vocal athletes. This also tasks persons to do further research into some of the areas Kellie would have touched on so that they can make relevant notes in their new journals and advance their singing trajectory.
Exploration of her book/journal “Every Singers Guide to Vocal Success” was also available for EC$35
