While Vincentians and nations across the world spent Saturday 18th April 2020 following the World Health Organization’s social distancing guidelines, members of Redroots, St. Vincent and the Grenadines roll out phase one of the project “Education through Grocery” in the communities of Green Hill and Diamond. The fifteen unemployed young mothers from the communities of Bequia, Kingstown, Owia, Green Hill, Diamond, and Chateaubelair, who are recipients of food baskets agreed by receiving to be part of project education through grocery.
Education through grocery is the initiative of RedRoot SVG which is a non-profit non-governmental organization that is geared in the Empowerment of women and children in St Vincent and the Grenadines. In the group quest to assist selected underprivileged families, RedRoot SVG embarked on phase one, a monthly distribution of food basket, of “Education through grocery”. Redroots SVG firmly believes that “saving a woman is saving a community” and with this, in mind, the project intent is to assist selected unemployed young mothers with monthly groceries, enrolled in skill training and is provided with transportation and meal subsidy to attend skill training.
At the successful completion of this project, participants will receive a certified skill that will provide them with income-earning opportunities; they will also receive empowerment sessions (mentoring, entrepreneurship, business management) and exposure to future Redroots SVG projects. Redroots SVG which was founded on the 28th July 2018 vision is to advocate for, empower and support victims and survivors of sexual abuse, violence, and inequality. Its mission is rooted in the value of Healing, Educating, Promoting Equality, Justice, Partnership, and Trust. As an NGO, Redroot SVG finances and survival is dependent on the support and contributions of its members and from donations made local, regional and international businesses, donors, institutions and individuals.
Mrs. Phylicia Alexander-Lavia, Chief Executive Director reminded the recipients that they are fortunate and numerous persons in your position will have loved to be part of “Education through Grocery”. Ms. Lavia also stated that this project, although yet not funded, is the intent of Redroots to be a permanent feature on the organization’s agenda, and is expected to have no failures after the execution of the project.
