Residents of the fishing community of Rose Place will be first in line for jobs if the New Democratic Party (NDP) is elected to government and are able to carry out their ambitious developmental programme.
Speaking on the party’s Monday Night Live program, NDP Chairman and Member of Parliament for West Kingstown Daniel Cummings said that his party intends to build a magnificent facility for tourists and locals alike.
He told host Colin Graham:
“On the first floor, and going up on that building is where we will create quality housing units. So on the ground floor, you have the little shops, the little place for artisans to ply their trade, and you have a court yard where the children for example who walk on the bra bra sticks” can play.
“When the cruise ships come in to port Kingstown there is hardly anything for them to do. That facility we are going to build in Rose Place will be a must visit for cruise ship passengers”.
“They will be able to come there and sample the local cuisine, the people will be there to prepare”.
“You would be creating a food court in the centre of the place with common tables. All the people who…people are paid to constantly clean the place, remove the empties and make sure there are no flies, and so forth”.
“There will be wash room facilities on the ground floor for the public as well and those facilities will be constantly cleaned and maintained. Employment for some of the same people who live in that area”.
Other prospective jobs for the area will come in the form of security if a mooring for boats is established as part of the plan. The community will be consulted before any final decisions are made including the design phase.
The development is part of the NDP plans to beautify and revitalise Kingstown while fulfilling its JOBS, JOBS, JOBS mantra which Cummings said was important for the party.
