Some public sector workers have been blamed for the late payment of bills for services rendered to the government.
Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves said on radio on September 22 that there were outstanding payments to hoteliers, guest houses, volunteers and some other categories.
“Get the paperwork for me…lets pay these bills,” he urged.
According to Gonsalves, there were some outstanding payments to be made for services rendered by individuals to clear ash, and some other work done for which persons had not been paid in about 8 weeks.
“That is not acceptable,” he said.
There was a problem a few weeks ago for the payment to persons who provided food (during the evacuation), however, Gonsalves said that he understood that that situation had been resolved.
He was anxious to get the payments out, he said, as a lot of the businesses were running on small budgets, and they had to meet their commitments to the bank as well as cover all other expenses.
“And I am going public, let’s get these things sorted out,” he said.
