Sjada Daniel, a 26-year-old Prospect resident who was denied bail two weeks ago on a burglary charge, was granted $10,000 bail with stringent conditions, on his return to Court yesterday (Thursday).
Daniel has been charged with entering Room 5 of the Buttercup Cottage Apartment at Arnos Vale as a trespasser, between 3am and 4am on September 27, this year, and stealing US$2,7490 and EC$500 in cash and several other items including two cellular phones, a quantity of jewelry, and United States and St. Vincent and the Grenadines passports, the property of Gurlyn Williams, 62-yearl-old Nursing Aid of the United States.
The combined value of the cash and items amounted to US$5,280 and EC$1,090,
When Daniel initially appeared before Chief Magistrate Rechanne Browne at the Serious Offences Court on October 18, Prosecutor Renrick Cato objected to bail, stating that the police had not recovered any of the items and were seeking to at least recover some. But the Chief Magistrate told the Prosecutor that it was already her intention to deny bail at that juncture.
She said that while the defendant pleaded not guilty, and was presumed innocent until proven guilty, she was concerned about the recent spate of burglaries in this country.
However, on Daniel’s return to Court yesterday, Prosecutor Cato indicated that the Prosecution was no longer objecting to bail, but requested suitable surety and conditions.
The Magistrate then granted bail in the sum of $10,000 with one surety, on condition that Daniel be put on a curfew between 7pm and 6am daily. He was also ordered to report to the Calliaqua Police Station on Mondays and Thursdays.
The Magistrate warned Daniel that she will revoke his bail if he breaches any of the bail conditions.
In relation to the curfew, she warned sternly. “If you are found on the road by the police one minute after 7 p.m., I will revoke you bail.”
The matter will be heard at a later date.
