As countries throughout the region and the rest of the world move to ease COVID-19 restrictions, Cabinet here was expected to be briefed by Dr. Simone Keizer-Beache (Chief Medical Officer) and Dr. Roger Duncan (Medical Officer of Health), on proposed amendments to the existing protocols, (earlier) this week.
Drs. Keizer and Duncan were scheduled to brief Cabinet last Wednesday, Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves disclosed while speaking on radio 705 on Wednesday morning.
Dr. Gonsalves noted that there was a lengthy discussion at Cabinet one week earlier during which health officials had given indication of some amendments to Covid-19 related protocols that they recommended for amendment.
While there was agreement with some of what was advanced, the Prime Minister said that there was need for clarity on others.
That said, Dr. Gonsalves reminded citizens that they needed to continue to adhere to the existing protocols for the time being.
“The numbers are down, but we cannot tempt faith,” he said.
He then procced to refer to two events held over the Heroes Day Weekend, saying that evidence had surfaced that some persons who attended those events did not pay much attention to the health protocols.
“I know the statistics reveal that there are presently no hospitalizations, and the count is down to one (as of March 16) active case,” he said, “But we are on one earth; the numbers are increasing in countries like Hong Kong, China, even in the UK…and we have to be very careful that we do not have another wave.”
