St. Vincent and the Grenadines has made history in the Commonwealth Short Story Prize as Cecil Browne has been declared a regional winner.

According to Commonwealth Writers, the organizers of the Short Story Prize, this is the first time an author from St. Vincent has won a regional award.

“We’ve seen another breakthrough for the prize, as the regional winners include authors from Eswatini, Singapore and St Vincent and the Grenadines for the very first time,” the organizers said in a Facebook post.

The regional winners were announced on May 22.

According to the organizers, the winning stories were drawn from a shortlist of 26 authors, following a record-breaking 6,730 entries this year.

Vincentian Cecil Browne wrote “ A Hat for Lemer”. The piece set on the 19th century is about a woman faced with a dilemma after emancipation.

There will be an overall winner who will be announced on June 21, 2022.
