With the noble motivation of providing for his family pushing him forward, Gadyon ‘Gaddy’ Graham of Simple Cuts put his 12 years of working at the bank behind him and not only moved towards a field that he is passionate about, but has set out to stand out in it.
Growing up in Fairbane Pasture Gadyon has always had the passion for barbering within him, it has something that has stayed with him throughout his tenures at the St. Martin’s Secondary School and St. Vincent and the Grenadines Community College.
But while Gaddy loved barbering, he acknowledged that it had one major shortcoming, waiting times, that combined with global pandemic provided the inspiration for a barber shop that doesn’t wait for clients to come to it, but goes to its clients.
‘Barbering has always been a passion of mine. I realized from experience how much time is wasted going to a barbershop. Plus during the pandemic many people would’ve been scared to visit close contact service places like those. So I thought it would be wise to bring the service to people wherever they want at their convenience. Hence “mobile barbering ” became my profession.’ Gadyon said.
Gadyon states that aside from his professional training in health and safety from Britain Master Barbers in addition to an online course, all other skills he has are self taught.
In his pursuit of his passion project that is now his full time profession, Gadyon has not been immune to challenges. Like many other entrepreneurs he has faced bumps in the road. Challenges such as building up clientele, finding appropriate pricing for his service.
‘Challenges? Building up a clientele. Getting my name out there. Reasonably pricing my service to make sure both the client and I are happy.’ Graham said.
He also noted that if his vehicle is out of commission that would also hamper his ability to deliver his service.
When asked what he would change if given the opportunity to do things all over again, his response was ‘nothing’, as he no longer contends with work related stress, due to the fact that he loves what he does and enjoys building a relationship with his clients.
According to Gaddy, the qualities of a good entrepreneur are ‘love of people. Organized. Reliability. Honesty and diligence.’
He also advised young barbers thinking of getting into the business to ‘Always keep yourself and your tools clean. And treat your clients with love and respect.’
