The procurement of a quantity of Tennis equipment is the first step to having an active Tennis programme in the Southern Grenadines, namely Canouan and Union Island.
The intention was spurred by the foresight of USA-based Unionites – Burnis Hutchinson and Elnore Adams, who gathered a large number of Tennis balls, along with rackets, and shipped them to Union Island for distribution.
The distribution process, spearheaded by the Union Island Lions Club, paved the way for the Tennis programme to serve off in the shortest possible timeframe.
President of the Lions Club Union Island- Atika James said that her organisation is more than glad to be part of a different experience on the two islands.
“We are glad to have Tennis introduced on the islands, especially into the schools, and we are thankful for the donations made possible by Hutchinson and Adams,” James commented.
James is buoyed that the Tennis programme is not restricted.
“The Programme when started will be island-wide and is for all ages, and we will be working along with the Sports Department and with the Sports Officer assigned to the Southern Grenadines- Rickydene Alexander and his assistants, to roll it out,” James assured.
Sports Officer Alexander, noted that the Ashton Hard Court has already been marked out barring a few nuts and bolts issues, Tennis action will commence soon.
Alexander joined James in expressing gratitude to Hutchinson and Adams for their thoughtfulness in getting the Tennis equipment for use in the Southern Grenadines.
Reports are that sporadic efforts were made in the past to establish the sport of Tennis among the local populations in the Southern Grenadines. Those effort had failed to take root.
